Remember that TV show…”That Was The Week That Was?” So okay…the tile is back-ordered and the bathroom is going nowhere…
so we moved on this week as best we could…starting with Constance Fowler (1907-1996), painter, print-maker, founder of the modern art department at Willamette University in 1938. R has curated an excellent Fowler show up at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art until July 21st…check it out. Last Sunday R gave a lecture and here (bad photo…from the projected slide…apologies) is Connie’s “selfie” from 1944…
and an early photo of her…
and after the lecture her niece and namesake Connie Bataille gave graceful remarks thanking R and the museum for showcasing Fowler’s work.
…then off we went to the uke “gig”…
and the week begins. We took a trip to Portland to look at some things of Jack McLarty’s in storage, bringing up a topic we’ve been thinking about lately…the dilemma of too much art on hand as an artist ages, and dies (McLarty died in 2011).
…we even found an early George Johanson painting in the mix…
Here was one of my favorites…Jack’s “Selfie” (of which he had MANY)…
a fascinating couple of hours…and then
off to New Seasons in search of a roasted chicken…
…meanwhile back in Salem Project Space opened the second show…young Chicano artists…quite smashing…here is Mario Gonzales’ wall painting…
and Rich McLoud sang at the opening…
while we all milled about…
Project Space is once again showing the edgiest work locally…this summer the shows move fast so you have to remain alert…
Project Space is under the Salem Art Association banner and here are some WPA photos of the beginning of SAA…the first gallery was in the basement of the old Salem High School, located on the property now home to Macy’s at Center and High Streets…
The gallery was built kind of in the hallway of the old school on the ground floor…and was flooded and ruined in the winter of 1942, when the Willamette River overflowed.
so I leave you with a quonset…right near my FAVORITE coffee place Crema, 28th and Ankeny SE…check it out…Have a good weekend!
